How the Coast Guard PEB Process Works

The Coast Guard operates its own disability evaluation system, which differs in important respects from the Army, Navy, and Air Force processes. When a Coast Guard member is found to have a condition that may prevent them from meeting retention standards, the case is referred through the Coast Guard's medical evaluation process and ultimately to a Physical Evaluation Board for a fitness and rating determination.

The Coast Guard PEB is administered through the Coast Guard Personnel Service Center. As with other branches, a combined disability rating of 30% or more — or 20 years of qualifying service — entitles you to disability retirement with lifetime monthly pay, TRICARE, and full military benefits. Below 30%, you receive only a one-time severance payment. The Coast Guard's smaller size means fewer attorneys have experience with its specific procedures — making experienced representation even more important.

What to Expect: Coast Guard PEB Timeline

Medical Evaluation

Your treating physician documents your condition and refers your case when it may prevent you from meeting Coast Guard retention standards. Thorough documentation at this stage is critical.

MEB Review

The Medical Evaluation Board reviews your records and prepares the NARSUM documenting your unfitting conditions. This document drives your entire PEB case.

Informal PEB

The PEB reviews your MEB packet and issues a written determination. You may accept, rebut, or demand a Formal PEB — a decision that should never be made without legal counsel.

Formal PEB (if requested)

You appear before the board with your attorney. We present evidence, cross-examine witnesses, and argue for the rating and disposition you deserve.

Final Disposition & Appeals

The PEB issues a final determination. If unfavorable, appeal options include the Board for Correction of Military Records (BCMR) and the Physical Disability Board of Review (PDBR).
